Can Grok Bot build Claude?

What you're paying for isn't code. No bot conjures a panel, a bank feed or a benchmark.

Disclosure up front: the drafting pipeline behind this site runs on Claude, so read this one knowing that. The verdict is still not close. What you pay for is a frontier model - years of training on hardware measured in football pitches - and no bot conjures one of those onto a VPS. A bot can absolutely run open models for you: Ollama on a decent machine gives you a private, free assistant that handles summarising, drafting and boilerplate without your words leaving the building. What it doesn't give you is the top-end reasoning, and the gap is not subtle on hard problems. If the $20 is paying for the hard problems, keep paying it.

The prompt

Written for a bot that already has a browser, a terminal and your logins · paste it in whole.

Don't try to replace the model - you cannot conjure a frontier model onto a rented box, and an open model dressed up as one will disappoint me precisely on the days I need it most.

What is worth doing: a private assistant for the boring middle of my work.
- Set up Ollama with a good current open model on a machine of mine - my own hardware if it has the memory, otherwise a GPU-capable VPS under my account (walk me through the signup · wait for me at the payment step).
- Give me one clean way in: a chat page behind a password on my domain, with TLS.
- Point it at the jobs where private beats brilliant: summarising documents I'd rather not upload anywhere, first drafts in my voice, rewriting, boilerplate.
- Be straight with me about the ceiling. When something needs real reasoning, say 'use the good model for this one' rather than letting the local one produce confident mush.
- Keep a monthly note of what the box costs to run against the subscription it was meant to replace. If the maths stops working, say so.

What you lose

  • frontier reasoning · open models are eighteen months behind on the problems where you notice
  • the surrounding product: projects, artifacts, code execution, memory
  • having nothing to run · your Ollama box is yours to feed and water
  • the free tier, which exists and may already be enough for you

The numbers

Pro is $20/mo billed monthly ($17 annual). Max starts at $100/mo for heavier usage. The free tier covers basic chat and is genuinely usable.
