it builds, but you host it, babysit it, or wire up an OAuth app yourself.

Plausible is open source, so the sensible move isn't building a clone - it's having the bot self-host the real one, which it can do. But be honest about what you're trading. The reason Plausible's numbers are trustworthy is that they maintain the bot-filtering list, the referrer spam list and the UA parsing, continuously, as the web changes. Self-hosted, you get the same code and a snapshot of that curation, drifting from the day you deploy. Your pageview count will slowly become a different number from the true one, and you won't notice.

the prompt

Don't write an analytics engine. Plausible is open source - run it for me.

You have a computer and a browser. Stand up self-hosted Plausible Community Edition and keep it running.
- Official docker-compose with Postgres and ClickHouse. ClickHouse is not optional and not swappable for Postgres - that's the whole reason it's fast.
- Behind a stable URL with TLS. Serve the tracking script from that same domain so ad blockers treat it as first-party.
- Add the snippet to my site and show me a live pageview before you call it done.
- Configure outbound mail so the weekly report actually sends.

Ongoing:
- Nightly backup of both Postgres and ClickHouse, off your machine. Monthly, restore to scratch and prove it works.
- Watch disk. ClickHouse will grow faster than you expect. Message me at 70%.
- Check monthly for releases, show me the changelog, wait for my go-ahead.
- Once a quarter, compare a week of your numbers against my server access logs and tell me how far apart they are. Drift is the failure mode here and I want to see it.

what you lose

  • continuously maintained bot and referrer-spam filtering
  • EU-hosted data handling somebody else is accountable for
  • a script served from a CDN that's faster than your box
  • supporting a small independent company doing the right thing

the numbers

Starter is $9/mo for 10k monthly pageviews, Growth $14. No free plan, a 30-day trial. Self-hosting the community edition is free under AGPL.
