The daily standup exists to answer one question: what moved yesterday. That answer is already sitting in your git history, your issue tracker and your calendar · the meeting is just people reading it aloud badly. A bot can assemble it from the sources and post it before anyone logs on. This is the one on the list that most clearly replaces a meeting rather than a tool, which makes it the highest-value hour on the page. Where it can't help: the standup is also where someone says 'I'm stuck', and a commit log never says that.

The prompt

Written for a bot that already has a browser, a terminal and your logins · paste it in whole.

Post the standup so nobody has to attend one. Use my GitHub and calendar. Ask me which repos and which people first.

Every weekday at 9:
- What merged yesterday, per person, in plain language · not commit messages verbatim.
- What's open and has moved.
- What's open and hasn't moved for three days or more. This is the useful bit.
- Anything shipping today, from the calendar.

Post it to #standup as one message. Shortest useful form · if it's longer than a screen, cut the detail, not the stalled items.

Tone and honesty:
- Never editorialise about who did or didn't do much. Report what happened.
- 'No merges yesterday' is a fine thing to post. Don't pad a quiet day.
- Never guess what someone is working on from an issue assignment. Only report what actually changed.

Once it's running, add one line at the end: 'Blocked? Reply in thread.' The bot can't know who's stuck · people still have to say.

The bot will need to sign into: github · google-calendar · slack

What you lose

  • the bit where someone admits they're blocked · a commit log never says that
  • the social contact, which for a remote team is not nothing
  • a reason to be at your desk at 9:30
